An Introduction

Do you have old family photos?

Are they organised and are they safe?

Do you wish you could enjoy and share your photos?

To help you address the issues raised by these questions, this talk will introduce you to Photogenealogy – what it is and how you can do it.

The organisation and care of both digital and physical photos will be outlined along with ideas for enhancing and sharing your family photos. The talk will conclude with ideas for creating a treasured and valuable photo legacy.

Photogenealogy:
Date and Identify
Family History Photos

Dating your family history photos is an important step in the Photogenealogy process and can help you identify unknown people in the photos. This talk will provide a step-by-step strategy that will help you to estimate the date a photo was taken. Important clues to look out for will be highlighted and useful resources will be discussed.

Putting a name to a face and a face to a name is one of the most rewarding parts of photogenealogy.

Photogenealogy:
Caring for your Digital Family History Photos

This talk will outline the process for getting your digital family history photos in order. Dealing with "dups & duds", adding keywords to enable fast and accurate searching, adding useful but concise filenames, and organising into folders will all be discussed. The importance of multiple and reliable back-ups, and different ways of achieving this will be explained.

Photogenealogy:
Caring for your Physical Family History Photos

This talk will outline the process for getting your physical family history photos in order. Deciding what to keep, and working out the best way to store your precious family history photos can be tricky, but this talk will help. Suitable materials will be explored, and preservation terms will be explained, so that you can be confident that you will be able to pass on your family history photos in the best possible condition.

Scanning will be mentioned very briefly in this talk but for more information about the scanning process please see the 'Scanning your Family History Photos' talk.

Photogenealogy:
Scanning your Physical Family History Photos

This introduction to scanners and scanning will begin with a brief discussion about the benefits of scanning our family history photos and will highlight some things to think about before getting started, including resolution and appropriate file types. Then a selection of scanners will be reviewed, and the pros and cons of each type will be explored.

Photogenealogy:
Enhance & Share your Family History Photos

So, your photos are dated, identified, scanned, keyworded, named, organised, backed-up and preserved. What next?

First of all, take a moment to pat yourself on the back - that is an amazing accomplishment. Now the fun begins!

This talk will discuss ways to improve and enhance individual photos and how to find new photos to grow your collection. Ideas will be suggested that will help you to share your family history photos because the best part of Photogenealogy is sharing your photos with family, both close and distant.

Photogenealogy:
Create a Legacy with your Family History Photos

What will happen to your family history photos and research after you are gone?

This is something many people prefer not to think about but a little thought and planning now can give peace of mind and provide heirs with a treasured and valuable inheritance. The benefits of writing a Genealogy Will and what to include will be discussed. Then different types of personal and family digital archives will be reviewed in terms of their benefits and important issues to consider when choosing one.
