Uncased Ambrotype

The effect of viewing an uncased Ambrotype against a dark and a light background. The dark background makes the image appear positive but an ambrotype is a negative image.

Daguerreotype in different lighting conditions

A Daguerreotype uses a highly polished metal plate to support the image. This makes the image difficult to see from certain angles and in certain types of lighting. Daguerreotypes are delightfully known as a "mirror with a memory".

Removing silvering

Demonstration of how a type of deterioration in old photos, known as silvering, can be removed using polarising filters.
